Thornton Gap Entrance Station Advisory

Due to a fire at the entrance gate, Thornton Gap - one of the park's busiest entrance stations - will be down to one lane. Please plan accordingly.

You may also pre-purchase your park pass online at recreation.gov, which will make the overall entrance station experience go quicker.

Horseback riding tours in Shenandoah National Park

There is no more genuine way to experience Shenandoah National Park than on horseback. A guided ride through a wooded trail on a mode of transportation yet to be improved upon by any technology offers an entirely new perspective.

Horseback and pony rides are available at Skyland Stables (mile 42.5 on Skyline Drive) throughout the day, weather permitting. Horseback rides depart from the stables, cross over Skyline Drive, and travel past the Limberlost area through an old apple orchard.

Ride Rates:

  • 1 Hour Ride - $59.99 plus tax per person

1 Hour Ride Departures:

  • Mon-Thurs: 9:45 AM; 11 AM; 1:15 PM; 2:30 PM
  • Fri-Sun: 8:30 AM; 9:45 AM; 11 AM; 1:15 PM; 2:30 PM

Important Guidelines:

  • Must be at least 4'10" tall and weigh less than 250 lbs.
  • No open-toed shoes or high heels.
  • Helmets must be worn.
  • Must be at stables 30 minutes prior to departure time.

Reservations are not required, but rides are unavailable 12:00 - 1:00 PM.

Ride Rates:

  • $7.99 plus tax per child for 15 minutes
  • $13.99 plus tax per child for 30 minutes

  • Child's feet must reach the stirrups.
  • Helmets must be worn.
