Shenandoah National Park rock climbing attracts rockhounds from far and wide who recognize the park offers some of the finest climbing in the eastern U.S. While this adventure might seem intimidating, rock climbing and rappelling is suited for all skill levels and combines teaching and climbing into an exciting half-day adventure. Set at the Little Stony Man cliffs, you’ll set off from Big Meadows Lodge with Shenandoah Mountain Guides and learn about climbing, rappelling and the fascinating history of these cliffs on your way to your climbing spot. This is a one-of-a-kind adventure inside Shenandoah National Park and it’s guaranteed to be an activity you never forget.

Scheduled Rock Climbing and Rappelling Adventures with Shenandoah Mountain Guides:

  • Available on select dates from March 27 - November 15 (see availability when you book online).
  • Classes start at 9:00 am from Skyland June 7 - September 14.
  • Classes start at 9:30 am from Skyland March 27 - June 5, and September 15 - November 15.
  • $160 per person.
  • Rate includes a boxed lunch featuring Roasted Turkey & Cheddar Cheese on a Wheat Bun (Lettuce, Tomato, Mustard, Mayonnaise), Apple, Granola Bar, Bag of Chips, Bottled Water, Paper Napkin/Moist Hand Wipe.

It is recommended that participants:

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes
  • Bring a small backpack to carry clothing you might shed while hiking
  • Bring a light rain poncho
  • Bring a camera to capture the experience

  • Maximum of 6 paid participants accepted for all departures.
  • Minimum of 2 paid participants required for program to be offered.
  • Should program be cancelled due to lack of participation or severe weather conditions, 7 day advance notice will be given.
  • 7 day advance reservation and cancellation notice is required.
  • Minimum age required is 8 years.  Children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The Shenandoah Mountain Guides' climbing program is one of the most respected in the east. The instructors average 15 years of experience teaching others how to climb. They are full-time teachers and guides as well as certified EMTs. They teach rock climbing at regional colleges, universities and national institutions, and they certify instructors for various youth organizations. The program at Little Stony Man Cliffs in Shenandoah is designed to be a highly effective introductory through intermediate learning program in rock climbing and rappelling.
